Privacy policy
Last updated November 3, 2026
This policy covers the earthslayer app for Android and this website, earthslayer.com. earthslayer is made by AjaVision LLC. "We" and "us" mean AjaVision LLC.
The short version
- There is no account. We never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking SDKs in the app or on this site.
- Your location, tracks, points, notes and photos stay on your phone.
- Your phone downloads map data from our servers. Those requests show which area of the map is being loaded, but not who you are.
- The one way your data reaches us is when you turn on Share with earthslayer for a recorded track. It's off until you turn it on.
What stays on your phone
The app works offline, and almost everything it does happens on the device:
- Your location. The app uses your phone's precise location to show where you are, record tracks, tell you whose land you're on, and work out routes. This happens on the phone. Your location is not sent to us or anyone else, except in a track you choose to share (see below).
- Your own data. Tracks, points, sets, notes, field values and photos are saved in a folder on your phone (Documents/earthslayer). The app keeps them there so they survive an uninstall. We turn off Android's cloud backup for the app, so none of it is copied to a Google backup by us.
- Motion sensors. While you record a track, the app reads the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass to describe how the road drove (bumps, braking, turns). These readings are stored with the track on your phone.
- Camera and photos. The camera is used to scan earthslayer QR codes and to take photos of a place you've marked. Photos you pick or take are copied into your earthslayer folder. The app does not record audio.
Map data from our servers
The map, the land and the other layers come from our servers at tiles.earthslayer.com, run on Cloudflare. Every request asks for one piece of the map, so it shows the area and zoom level being loaded. Requests carry no account, user ID or advertising ID. Like any internet server, ours sees your IP address. Cloudflare keeps short-lived request logs so we can operate and protect the service. We don't use these logs to build a profile of anyone.
Aerial imagery is passed through our server from the US Geological Survey, so the USGS does not see your IP address. Once you've downloaded a state, the map for it needs no network at all.
Tracks you choose to share
When you finish recording a track, the app offers a Share with earthslayer switch. It's off until you turn it on. The first time you turn it on, the app explains what's sent and asks you to confirm. We use shared tracks to learn how roads actually drive (surface, roughness, difficulty) and to improve the map.
What a shared track contains
- The whole recorded line, including where it starts and ends. That may be your home or another place you'd rather keep private.
- The readings saved with each point: time, GPS accuracy, altitude, speed, heading, and the motion summary (vibration, acceleration and rotation).
- A random contributor ID made on your phone the first time you share. It groups your shared tracks together. It isn't linked to your name, email, phone or Google account.
- The app's version and the platform (Android).
A shared track does not include its name, notes, photos or any field values you added.
How it's stored and used
Shared tracks are stored in private storage that is not publicly accessible. We use them to study roads and to build map data such as road surface and difficulty. We may publish results that come from many tracks together, but never an individual track. We don't sell shared tracks, and we don't share them with advertisers or data brokers.
Stopping, and taking a track back
You can turn sharing off at any time in Settings → Capture. Tracks you record after that stay on your phone. A track that has already been shared can't be withdrawn from within the app. If you want it removed, contact us at the address below and we'll do our best to help. Because shared tracks carry no name or account, we may not be able to tell which tracks are yours.
Sharing with other people
- Phone to phone. Sending a place or a set by tap uses Google Play services' Nearby Connections to pass it straight between the two phones. A QR code carries the data in the code itself. A share file is a normal file that you send however you choose. None of these go through our servers.
- Party (Meshtastic). If you pair a Meshtastic radio, the app talks to it over Bluetooth. Your radio broadcasts your position and any messages you send over its radio channel. With a group code set, only radios using the same code can read them. With no group code, they go out on the public Meshtastic channel, and anyone with a Meshtastic radio in range can receive them. Radio traffic never passes through our servers.
Permissions the app asks for
- Location (precise): to show your position, record tracks, and tell you whose land you're on.
- Camera: to scan QR codes and take photos of places.
- Photos: to attach an existing photo to a place.
- Bluetooth and nearby devices: to reach a Meshtastic radio and to share with a phone next to yours.
- All files access: to keep your data in the earthslayer folder in Documents, where an uninstall won't remove it.
You can turn any of them off in Android settings. Only the features that need that permission will stop working.
